A string of warm and ripe vintages in the Hunter Valley always puts the winemakers on edge in anticipation of the harvest to come. So, after the very warm and dry 2017 and 2018 seasons the locals were restless, Would the dry continue or would the we see a summer deluge the result of tropical cyclones in Queensland? The 2018 Winter was dry and very frosty with some near record low temperature but little rainfall. Late winter and early spring delivered just enough moisture to ensure a good start to the drying season and healthy vineyards. Through spring and early summer, we were fortunate to get rain at critical times which was supplemented with constant irrigation. The underlying weather pattern was only to lead us further into drought conditions and so we arrived at the third dry harvest on the trot. The Vintage, while not receiving the fierce heat spikes of 2018, was without a doubt a warm one and will be marked by wines with richness, generosity and an abundance that can only come from a warm season.
